Thai massage

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage is an ancient healing art that is a branch of the Thai Medicine tradition, and is deeply rooted in Buddhist spirituality. It is practiced as a moving meditation, where the therapist uses their hands, elbows, feet and knees to apply acupressure, deep stretches, and rhythmic movements to the receiver’s body.

The practitioner works along lines (or pathways) in the body called Sen, with the intention of helping the body to return to a state of balance by addressing blockages or restrictions.

The spritual dimension and focus of the practice centres on the cultivation of a profound meditative clarity whilst giving. The four Brahma Viharas are a guide to the intentions and essence of the offering of Thai massage:

  • Metta (friendship/kindness/care) - "I offer my care to you"
  • Karuna (Compassion understanding) - "I see and understand your suffering."
  • Mudita (Sympathetic Joy) - "I celebrate your joy with you."
  • Upekkha (Equanimity) - "I remain in my centre."

These four qualities are beautifully explained in this video: Thich Nhat Hanh explaining the Brahma Viharas

The most precious gift we can offer others is our presence.
